Waco had David Koresh and the Branch Davidians, San Diego had Marshall Applewhite and Heaven's Gate, and Jonestown had Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple. All well-known cults that ended with multiple deaths and widespread tragedy.
But in the 1990s, there was another, lesser-known cult operating in the Fresno, California area and they were led by a man who believed that he was not only Jesus Christ, but also a Vampire King.
Marcus Wesson was the son of a religious zealot and an alleged alcoholic child molester. He grew up in Kansas City, Missouri.
His mother, Carrie, was a devoted member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church… a Christian sect rooted in the belief of a nearing second-coming of Jesus Christ and the damnation of sinners. His father is described as a sadistic drunk who was "inappropriately affectionate" with his own children.
Later in life, Marcus was living in California and developed a bond with the 7-year-old daughter of his girlfriend. Elizabeth said Marcus would spend hours playing with her… teaching her card games and how to make wooden figurines. He had a great imagination, too. She said he would pretend to be a knight in shining armor who came to rescue the princess. Sometimes there would be a fake proposal.
By the time Elizabeth was 14, she was pregnant. She and Marcus married shortly afterward, with her mother's permission.
Eventually, Marcus and Elizabeth would have 16 children living under their roof. The family bounced around between odd living quarters, like old buses, Army tents and defunct boats.
Marcus wrote a thousand-page book called 'In the Night of the Light for the Dark.' It was from this book that Marcus preached to his family and taught his children that this book was not a work of fiction, but was to be taken as absolute law.
Many of the women int he household would become pregnant with his children. Some of them would try to escape.
Join us for part one of a two part deep-dive into the twisted world of Marcus Wesson, the Fresno Vampire King.
Trigger Warning: This episode deals with incest, and the sexual abuse and murder of minors. However, we believe is an important lesson to be learned in what can happen when children are not protected, and an intelligent master-manipulator is left to his own devices. Listener discretion is advised.
